Mad as a May Hare!

We're a couple of months late but my Partner Anna Celeste Watson and I are mad about hares this month, so whenever we've had a spare moment we've been driving around the Dorset countryside peering over hedges trying to spot one! As our attempts have proven to be a bit unsuccessful, I decided instead to start drawing one - as you can see he's a bit rough around the edges at the moment but he's certainly taking shape.

I'm planning on selling prints when he's complete so keep your eyes peeled for the finished article coming soon...

Infographic for Cruelty-Free International

It was fantastic to have been asked by The BUAV / Cruelty-Free International to design an illustrated infographic style timeline to mark the upcoming ban on animal testing for cosmetics in the EU.

The brief was fairly open and it was great to have been allowed free reign over the design. They were really pleased with the finished piece and as well as forming the centrepiece of their web based promotion of the ban, it will also be used as a pull-up banner to be used at their events.

Webcredible Office Wall Designs

After creating the illustrations for London customer experience design company Webcredible's website (working with my Partner Anna Celeste Watson), they commissioned me to help them reflect their new web branding in their office space in Southwark, SE1.

I strongly replicated design elements from the website in the office for a consistent brand experience, using the simple style of line drawings and same colour coding as the website for different office areas. The office wall designs also include some more quirky elements - for example the website navigation was reflected by the introduction of 'breadcrumbs' in the corners of each office area to indicate your location, and bespoke illustrations of office related objects like plants and lamps were contrasted with more surreal ones like fireplaces and animals in order to give a fun, creative feel and inspire the staff.

I'm really pleased the feedback for the whole work has been really positive and the graphics are a currently being installed in stages.

True Colours Illustrations

True Colours is a groundbreaking new web based mood monitoring system created through a joint project between the Oxford Cognitive Health and Neurosciences Clinical Trials Unit (OCHNCTU) of Oxford University and the Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust. Its aim is to allow its users to be able to self-report on their moods, help them manage their mental health, and create more productive consultancy time by allowing remote data analysis by GP's before consultations.

True Colours wanted a more friendly and engaging experience for their users than their current site had, so approached me to create illustrations for the system to make it seem less clinical, more approachable and to encourage interaction.

The site launched this December and has already far had fantastic feedback.

Anya17 Wins Anti-Slavery Day Media Awards 2012

I am thrilled to announce that Anya17, for which I created the logo and graphic design work for, has won 'Best stage or film production dealing with human trafficking' at the Anti-Slavery Day Media Awards 2012.

Anya17 is a one-of-a-kind opera that seeks to expose the desperate plight of sex trafficking victims in the UK. Composed by award winning composer Adam Gorb, directed by award winning director Caroline Clegg, with libretto by Ben Kaye who instigated the whole project, the opera premiered with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Ensemble 10/10 on March 7th 2012, which I attended as a guest and was blown away by!

Following the succes of this media award, the opera will now also be staged in Europe and Romania in 2013 which is fantastic news.

It's Raining Cats and Dogs!

Not one to be beaten by the bracing British weather I thought I'd instead take it as inspiration and use it as an opportunity to launch some new Cat and Dog t-shirt designs. And I'm delighted to say that all profits will go to those good people at Cats Protection and Dogs Trust.

The designs were originally left over from early concepts of a project commissioned by a boutique children's clothing label I am working with, but rather than leaving them sat in a drawer gathering dust I thought I'd rework them and let them bound out into the world for all to meet.

T-Shirts, Hoodies and other merchandise featuring the lovable pair are currently available on Society6 and under the Compassionate Tees collective. Prints, posters, iphone and ipad cases are also available in my Redbubble shop.

Get them while you can!

A Lush Project

Sometimes, when you admire a company and share its ethos it's just great to have the opportunity to work with them. Of course, it's always a bonus when they turn out to be great fun to work with too.

So when LUSH Cosmetics contacted me and asked if I would create a presentation for them, in their house style, telling the story of the Cosmetics Directive and their fight to have it enforced I was absolutely delighted to be able to say yes!

Benjamin Zephaniah Poem in Resurgence Magazine

I am very excited to have been commissioned to illustrate 'Luv Song' a poem by the leading contemporary poet Benjamin Zephaniah which has now been published in the March/April 2012 issue 271 of Resurgence Magazine on 'Animals - A New Ethics'.

The poem is Benjamin's paean to the humble hedgehog, and the illustration has been used to accompany it in a special edition on 'ANIMALS: A NEW ETHICS' totally dedicated to the subject of animal rights.

After submitting the illustration I was pleased to receive a personal thumbs up from Benjamin who commented:

"That hedgehog is cool. Brilliant."

ethicaledge® Website Site of the Week in New Media Age

My Partner Web Designer Anna Celeste Watson commissioned me to create several illustrations for ethicaledge® - the first charity recruitment agency to specialise in connecting digital marketing managers, social media specialists and talented communications people with amazing charity jobs. Our favourite illustration is also used on a separate blog for Lauren Bates - the founder of ethicaledge®.

We are really excited that the site has also made it to the shortlist of Site Inspections in the design industry magazine New Media Age getting a very good score for 'Branding' based on its simple 'eye-catching cartoon-style design' and was recommended as 'one to keep an eye on' once the site content builds up.

Anya17 Contemporary Opera Branding

I am currently working on the logo and graphic design work for Anya17 - an extraordinary opera which seeks to expose the desperate plight of sex trafficking victims in the UK.

Anya17 is an original, compelling operatic story of an eastern-European ingénue who leaves her homeland for a new life in the West. Dark undercurrents are soon evident as her decision to forge a new future casts her into a relentless whirlpool of trauma, emotional disintegration and death.

Following Librettist Ben Kaye's lauded collaboration 'Eternal Voices' with 'British Composer Award' Winner Adam Gorb, Anya17 premieres by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Ensemble 10/10 on March 7th 2012. A documentary following the progress of the production of Anya17 starts this September by Liverpool Hope, headed by BAFTA award winner Francis Vose.

Frank & Faith 'Highly Commended' in RSPCA Good Business Awards

I am really excited that ethical fashion label Frank & Faith - whose site my Partner Web Designer Anna Celeste Watson and I created back in Autumn 2007, and which we refreshed this Spring 2011 with a new 'Made in the UK' flag graphic I also created for use at their trade shows - won a 'Highly Commended' award for Best Small Fashion Business in the RSPCA Good Business Awards 2011. We encouraged their Founder Anya Pearson to draw up an Animal Welfare Policy and publish it on their website, given they do so much to ensure their clothes are made ethically for people, planet and animals.
